The Tour

North Sea Cycle Route - Carolinensiel

Very maritime is a cycle tour on the North Sea Coast Cycle Route, which takes you from the mouth of the Ems to the mouth of the Elbe. Small and large fishing villages lie along the way through East Frisia, Butjadingen and the "Wet Triangle" between the Weser and Elbe rivers, everywhere a good opportunity for mussels and plaice, crabs and cabbage. But the towns of Emden, Bremerhaven and Cuxhaven are also worth seeing and have a long and exciting history.

North Sea Cycle Route - Cuxhaven

Day 1 Arrival in Emden
The starting point of your journey is the Reformation town of Emden, birthplace of Karl Dall and Otto Walkes. Visit the harbour, the art gallery or the Otto-Huus.

Day 2 Emden - Norden region, approx. 60 km/37 mi
Cycle along the coast to the crab fishing village of Greetsiel. In the Ley Bay you might spot seals, then you reach Norden with some splendid town houses and windmills.

Day 3 Norden - Esens region, 32-45 km/20-28mi
The cycle tour leads along the dyke, many former fishing villages offer access to the sea and are usually harbours for the boats to the islands. You cycle through the beautiful village of Nessmersiel before a breathtaking panoramic view of the islands of Baltrum and Langeoog awaits you at the North Sea resort of Dornumersiel.

Day 4 Esens region - Wilhelmshaven, 72-76 km/45-47 mi
You cycle past Wangeroode and reach the Jade Bight. The bay was first formed by medieval storm tides, especially the 2nd Marcellus tide in 1362. Wilhelmshafen was and still is a large naval base.

Day 5 Wilhelmshaven - Bremerhaven, 45 km/28 mi
You cycle along the Jade Bight through Butjadingen, worth seeing is the Floating Moor, which gives you an impression of the original landscape. From Blexen the ferry takes you to Bremerhaven.

Day 6 Bremerhaven - Cuxhaven, approx. 50 km/31 mi
You could still visit the "Auswandererhaus" (museum of emigration) before setting off along the Wurster North Sea coast. The former Hamburg town of Cuxhaven is not only the largest fishing port, but also a health resort and offers sandy beaches and mud flats, museums and culture.

Day 7 Excursion to Neuwerk or cycle tour
Depending on the weather and tides, you can make an excursion to the island of Neuwerk by ferry or covered wagon. Or you can go on a cycle tour in the hinterland of the Elbe estuary.

Day 8 Return or extension
The tour ends after breakfast. If you like, extend your tour along the North Sea Cycle Route.
