German-Danish North Sea Cycle Route

With islands Sylt & Rømø in 8 days / 7 nights from 899 €

The Tour

North Sea Cycle Route - Hallig Hooge

The German-Danish North Sea Cycle Route takes you across the islands of Sylt and Rømø - from Germany to Denmark. White sandy beaches, lush green meadows with sheep and the Wadden Sea shape the face of these islands, the Halligen and the entire coastal region. Here you’ll be able to relax and unwind with a piece of Friesentorte cake and Smørrebrød. You’ll cycle through the beautiful landscapes of North Frisia and South Jutland on consistently flat paths. This tour is suitable for cyclists of any ability.

North Sea Cycle Route - Husum

Day 1 Arrival in Husum
Explore the vibrant market town of Husum Au, birthplace of the writer Theodor Storm.

Day 2 Husum - Schlüttsiel, approx. 45-55 km / 28-34 mi
You’ll keep cycling along the dike, through the Wadden Sea National Park to Schlüttsiel, the port for the northern Halligen.

Day 3 Trip Hallig Hooge, 10 km / 7 mi + boat trip
The ferry takes you to the marsh island with its thatched houses and green meadows. A visit to the Sturmflut cinema is worthwhile – it shows short films about the dramatic strom surges this region has to endure.

Day 4 Schlüttsiel - Sylt - Rømø, 60km/37mi +train/boat trip
The train to Sylt takes you across the Hindenburg Dam. Choose between a day of relaxing by the sea on the 40 kilometre long sandy beach, or a bike tour. You can either cycle to Denhoog or the Old Frisian House, a former residential building constructed in 1739 that is now a museum. Then you’ll take the ferry to the Danish island of Rømø.

Day 5 Island day on Rømø
Get ready for a day on a white sandy beach, which, by the way, is very accessible by bike. If you’d like to get more active,  you can visit the Danish National Museum with Kommandørgården and Toftum Skole, or marvel at the whale skull bones in Kongsmark.

Day 6 Havneby - Ribe, approx. 45 km / 28 mi
You’ll cycle over the dam to the green mainland. From afar you can see Ribe Cathedral, the city's landmark. Stroll through the town, which was important during the Middle Ages and the Viking Age. The open-air museum Ribe VikingeCenter is well worth a visit.

Day 7 Ribe - Esbjerg, 35 km / 22 mi
You’ll cycle along the North Sea to Esbjerg, an important Danish port city with the famous group of sculptures “Mennesket ved Havet”  - Men at Sea. A trip to the island of Fanø is worthwhile and you might see seals or gray seals.

Day 8 Return or Extension
The tour ends after breakfast. If you like, extend your cycle tour on the German-Danish North Sea Cycle Route.
