This cycling holiday on the North Sea truly deserves its name, as you will cross over to three of the East Frisian islands and can enjoy the sea and sandy beaches to the full. Cycling is not neglected either, beautiful routes await you behind the dyke at the Wadden Sea, along the Ems-Jade Canal and of course on the islands. Even though East Frisia is not always completely flat, even inexperienced cyclists can cycle very well here.
Day 1 Arrival in Emden
The starting point of your journey is the Reformation town of Emden, birthplace of Karl Dall and Otto Walkes. Visit the harbour, the art gallery or the Otto-Huus.
Day 2 Trip to Borkum, swimming or cycling
The crossing to the largest East Frisian island takes two hours. Enjoy the day on the excellent network of cycle paths or on the long sandy beach.
Day 3 Emden - Norden region, approx. 55 km/34 mi
Cycle along the coast to the crab fishing village of Greetsiel. In the Ley Bay you might spot seals, then you reach Norden with some splendid town houses and windmills.
Day 4 Trip to Norderney, swimming or cycling
Today you go to the dune island of Norderney. Cycling tours, beach walks or a bathing day would be today's programme, plus perhaps a stroll through the town of the same name on the island.
Day 5 Norden - Island of Langeoog, approx. 34 km/21 km
The cycle tour leads behind the dikes along the Wadden Sea. Dornum had several chieftain's castles in the Middle Ages and today has a magnificent moated castle. In Bensersiel you cross over to the next island.
Day 6 Island day on Langeoog, bathing or cycling
The first tourists arrived on the island in 1830, and today it is a popular holiday destination. A railway connects the jetty with the town. 14 km of sandy beach and the Flinthörn dune landscape make sure you don't get bored.
Day 7 Island of Langeoog - Emden, approx. 65 km/40 km
Back on the mainland, you cycle to the former East Frisian residence of Aurich and then follow the Ems-Jade Canal almost car-free back to Emden.
Day 8 Departure or extension
End of tour after breakfast, why not extend your cycling holiday at the North Sea.
