This great cycle tour takes you all around East Frisia and the northern part of Oldenburg. You will experience the different landscapes of the region - the geest ridges in Ammerland, the former bogs in the Fehn area, the marshes along the coast, and with Norderney you can also visit one of the North Sea islands. Oldenburg, Emden and Aurich are cities worth seeing, Dangast offers a very beautiful sandy beach. This cycle tour in East Frisia is also ideally suited for the inexperienced.
Day 1 Arrival in Oldenburg
The starting point of your cycle tour is the residence and capital of the Duchy and later Free State of Oldenburg. Explore the well-preserved old town on the Hunte.
Day 2 Oldenburg - Wiesmoor, approx. 55 km/34 mi
The first tour leads through the Ammerland region. You cycle past the Zwischenahner Meer to Wiesmoor, which was first established in the 18th century as a centre for peat extraction.
Day 3 Wiesmoor - Emden, approx. 55 km/34 mi
Today you cycle through the Fehn region to Aurich, the former capital of East Frisia. The Ems-Jade Canal takes you almost car-free to Emden, an important Frisian harbour town since time immemorial.
Day 4 Emden - Norden region, approx. 55 km/34 mi
You cycle north to the Wadden Sea. In Greetsiel there are still crab fishermen who sell from the boat, and in the Ley Bay, with a bit of luck, seals can be observed.
Day 5 Excursion to Norderney Island
Today you can explore an East Frisian island by bike (ferry not included). Alternatively, there is a cycle tour along the coast.
Day 6 Norden Region - Wittmund Region, 50-62 km/31-39 mi
The cycle tour leads through the marshlands to Dornum with its beautiful moated castle and on to the former chieftain town of Esens. The art mile and a sculpture garden delight art lovers in Wittmund.
Day 7 Wittmund region - Dangast, 38-50 km/24-31 mi
First you go to Jever, once a seaport and today famous for its beer. The seaside resort of Dangast lies on the Jade Bay and is somewhat elevated so that no dyke disturbs the view.
Day 8 Dangast - Oldenburg, approx. 50 km/31 mi
One attraction is the Jaderberg Animal and Leisure Park, then you cycle through the Oldenburg countryside back to your starting point.
